Best Steam Mops for Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors cost £40 to £100 per square metre. The last thing you want is to damage them with a steam mop. The internet is full of conflicting advice: "never use steam on wood" vs "steam is fine on hardwood." The truth is in the middle. Sealed hardwood is steam-safe on low settings. Unsealed, oiled or waxed hardwood is not. We tested 4 steam mops on sealed oak and engineered wood for 6 months to prove it with data, not opinions.

Tank Size500 ml
Heat-Up30 seconds
Steam3 settings + Blast
Weight4.1 kg

Value for Money82%
Ease of Use88%

What We Like

  • Lift-Away transforms from floor mop to handheld steamer for hobs, taps, grout and upholstery
  • Three adjustable steam settings (Low, Medium, High) for delicate floors like sealed hardwood
  • Larger 500 ml tank extends continuous cleaning to 30+ minutes per fill
  • Anti-calc cartridge prevents limescale buildup in hard water areas (most of southern England)

Watch Out For

  • At £149, it costs £30 more than the S6003 for the Lift-Away and steam control features
  • Heavier at 4.1 kg due to the larger tank and Lift-Away mechanism
  • Handheld mode requires holding the full weight of the unit, which is tiring after 5 minutes
Rachel Hughes's Verdict

The Shark Pro S6003UK is the best steam mop for homes with mixed floors and above-floor cleaning needs. The Lift-Away handheld mode tackles hobs, bathroom tiles and grout lines. Three steam settings protect delicate floors. Worth the £30 upgrade if you want more than just floor cleaning.

The Drip Test: Is Your Wood Safe for Steam?

💧

Drop Water on the Floor

Place a few drops of water on your hardwood in an inconspicuous area (under furniture or in a corner). Wait 60 seconds. This simple test tells you whether steam is safe for your floor.

Water Beads = Steam Safe

If the water sits on the surface as droplets after 60 seconds, your floor is sealed with polyurethane or lacquer. Steam on low settings is safe. Use the Shark Pro S6003UK on setting 1.

Water Absorbs = No Steam

If the water soaks into the wood within 60 seconds, your floor is unsealed, oiled or waxed. Do not use a steam mop. Use a barely damp microfibre mop with hardwood cleaner instead.

Engineered wood: Most engineered wood floors (top layer of real wood on a plywood base) are pre-sealed at the factory and are steam-safe on low settings. Check with your flooring supplier if unsure. Brands like Kahrs and Boen recommend low-moisture cleaning compatible with gentle steam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Can you use a steam mop on hardwood floors?
Yes, on sealed hardwood and engineered wood only. Use low steam settings and keep the mop moving continuously. Sealed hardwood has a polyurethane or lacquer finish that prevents moisture penetration. Unsealed, oiled or waxed hardwood should never be steam cleaned.
Q Will steam damage hardwood?
Not if the wood is properly sealed and you use low steam. The risk comes from excess moisture penetrating unsealed or damaged areas. We tested for 6 months on sealed oak with zero damage. However, oiled hardwood (common in Scandinavian-style homes) can have the oil stripped by steam.
Q What is the difference between sealed and unsealed hardwood?
Sealed hardwood has a clear polyurethane, lacquer or varnish coating. Water beads on the surface. Unsealed hardwood absorbs water immediately. The drip test: drop a small amount of water on the floor. If it beads, the floor is sealed and steam-safe. If it absorbs within 30 seconds, it is unsealed.
Q How do I clean unsealed hardwood without steam?
Use a barely damp microfibre mop with a hardwood-specific cleaning solution. Wring the mop until almost dry. Never use excess water on unsealed wood. For deep cleaning, hire a professional wood floor specialist. Alternatively, consider having the floor sealed, which then makes it steam-safe.
